AG Neuropädiatrie

About / Biography

  • Professor Bertsche is a clinician scientist trained in General Pediatrics and Neuropediatrics, and has a profound clinical and research interest in pediatric epileptology , especially in drug therapy safety, in social pediatric aspects, and in pathomechanisms of the disease. Furthermore, her interest is on neuroprotection in the immature brain.

Research Projects

  • The focus of our research is on drug therapy safety and social pediatric aspects in pediatric epileptology and developmental neurology.
  • A particular emphasis currently is the management of seizures and the safe administration of anticonvulsant emergency drugs by non-professionals such as parents, preschool teachers and school teachers. Moreover, we aim at improving prescription and administration of anticonvulsant long-term medication by physicians, nurses, patients and families. Besides, we investigate the perception of epilepsy and developmental disorder by patients and their families, and the effects of the disorders on daily life. We are especially interested in the perception of the effects of anticonvulsant drug therapy and adverse drug events of anticonvulsants by patients and their parents.
  • A second focus area is experimental research on pathomechanisms of epilepsy and on neuroprotection of the immature brain especially in neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.
